Mountain ecosystems are comprised of mountainous terrain. The Andes, Alps and Rocky mountains are all alpine or mountain ecosystems. The temperatures in the summer range from 40º to 60º F and winter temperatures drop below freezing. The alpine biome is a tough place for plants to live. It’s windy, cold, and the sunlight at these high altitudes is very strong. There are only about 200 species of alpine plants due to the lack of carbon dioxide needed to create photosynthesis. As the amount of CO² increases on our planet, this might change.
