Come see for yourself why South Africa is considered to be one of the most diverse countries on Earth. Trip highlights include:

  • Milnerton lighthouse with the postcard view of Table Mountain in the background.
  • Dassen Island lighthouse - one of only six breeding sites for great white pelicans.
  • Cape Columbine lighthouse - one of the few manned lighthouses in South Africa.
  • Green Point lighthouse - the oldest lighthouse in South Africa.
  • Slangkop lighthouse - the tallest cast iron structure in the country.
  • Danger Point lighthouse - close to the site where the command "women and children first" was first given.
  • Cape Agulhas lighthouse - southern most point in Africa.

Our Itinerary

Day 1

Cape Town

After arriving we drive to the hotel and check in. On route we stop off at the Milnerton Lighthouse with Table Mountain as a back drop.
Tonight we stay in Bloubergstrand with the postcard picture view of Table Mountain and Robben Island in the sunset.

Days 2-4

West Coast Lighthouses

We have the next few days to explore the beauty of the West Coast and the two main lighthouses, Dassen Island and Cape Columbine.
A Boat trip to Dassen Island takes us to one of only 6 breeding sites for Great White Pelicans and a variety of other birds. The Cape columbine Nature Reserve is home to one of the few manned lighthouses of South Africa, Cape Columbine Lighthouse.
After taking our time to photograph it, we will have time to watch the sun set from the side of the prism as the light comes on.
We overnight in the area of the lighthouses.

Days 5-7

The Lighthouses of the Peninsula

Today we drive back to Cape Town and make a quick stop at the Green Point Lighthouse in the City. This is the oldest lighthouse in South Africa. From here we travel through Hout Bay to Kommetjie. The Harbour of Hout Bay has many wonderful opportunities to photograph the yachts and fishing vessels.

The skyline of the tranquil village, Kommetjie, has one point of interest, the Slangkop Lighthouse. This is the tallest cast iron structure on the SA coast. Here we will watch the lights come on and the lighthouse start its daily toil.

On day 2 on the Peninsula, we drive the short distance to the two light houses of Cape Point. The old lighthouse is at 237m above sea level and the new one only 87m. We overnight on the Peninsula.

Days 8-9

Hangklip and Danger Point

A drive all along the cost dings us to the eastern boundary of False Bay and the Hangklip Lighthouse. A short hike brings us face to face with this unmanned lighthouse with its magnificent back drop of Cape Hangklip and the mountain.  On route to Danger Point we drive through the whale watching village of Hermanus where we will overnight the next few nights. The Danger Point Lighthouse was erected close to the site where the Birkenhead sank and for the first time the command "women and children first" was given.

Days 10-11

The Southern-most tip of Africa

From Hermanus we drive through the wheat growing region of the Overberg to the southern-most tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas. This manned lighthouse is built in an Egyptian style and keeps this part of the coast safe.

What this lighthouse lacks in backdrop, it makes up for in its position and style.
We overnight in the sea side village of Arniston-Waenhuiskrans, the only town in South Africa with an English and Afrikaans name combination.

Day 12

Departure

The road back to Cape Town leads us through the mountains and wheat areas of the Southern Cape. On route we might still have one or two opportunities to take great landscape photographs.
