THE TANZANIA MIGRATION SAFARI

In Colaboration with

David Anderson Safaris

27 January - 10 February 2011

You are invited to join photographer Ray Christenson on a safari of a lifetime during the season when over 1.5 million wildebeest and one-quarter of a million zebra are on the Serengeti Plains in the Tanzania. This is one of the best times to be in the Serengeti in that it is when the most babies are born.

Our safari will not only be about the migration. We will also visit the other wildlife reserves in Tanzania’s “Northern Circuit,” Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Crater. In addition, we will have an up close experience with the Maasai on a private Maasai group ranch.

If you are a serious photographer, you will want to arrive a day early and experience a game drive in Arusha National Park to practice your photography. Your day of photography will be followed by a “work-flow” discussion with photographer, Ray Christenson. If time allows, you can end your East Africa safari with a few days in Zanzibar.

The lodges and camps used on this safari will be of the same deluxe standard as the ones found in the award winning book, On Safari.

Maximum Participants: 16 with 4 photographers per 7 passenger Land Rover with the photographer leader rotating between vehicles. We reserve the right to put up to 6 non-photographers in a 7 passenger Land Rover. Our commitment is to assure that the photographers have plenty of room to move around inside the Land Rover.

Optional Pre-Safari Photography Workflow Workshop

Wednesday, 26 January 2011
Arusha National Park

If you want to learn about digital workflow, you will arrive today so that you can spend a day with Ray Christianson. You will need to arrive this evening, two days before the rest of the group. Arusha National Park is one-half way between Kilimanjaro International Airport and the town of Arusha, only about a 30-minute drive from the airport..

Mount Meru Game Lodge

Thursday, 27 January 2011
Arusha National Park

It has been a long journey so we will want to start our day at a slower pace than normal. After a late breakfast, our photographic leader will lead a short workshop on how to get the most from your safari. We did not come to Africa to hear a lecture or sit in a workshop! This afternoon we will take a game drive in Arusha National Park. We will explore the "Little Serengeti" plains in the south, walk to stunning gorges and waterfalls in the north, enjoy the tropical mountain rainforests, experience the diverse fauna and flora along the Momella Lakes with its rich flamingo population and discover the secret haven of the hidden Ngurdoto Crater - nick-named "little Ngorongoro" due to its stunning beauty and rich wildlife. All these highlights are towered by the shining glaciers of Kilimanjaro and the horseshoe-like cliffs at the peak of Mt. Meru – occasionally covered with snow. Arusha National Park is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful destinations in the country.

Friday, we will spend our morning in the park photographing. We will return to our lodge for lunch. After lunch we will download our images and have time to do some editing before meeting with Ray to present our work. The meeting times will be determined by consensus of the group. This will be influenced by the number of people that sign up for this pre-safari photographic digital workflow workshop and peoples interest.

ArushaSINYA & MOUNT KILIMANJARO

We begin our safari this morning with a short drive to a private Maasai group ranch at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro standing 19,341 feet above sea level. We will spend two days photographing the wildlife with Mount Kilimanjaro as our backdrop. The area is known for elephants, which move between Kenya’s Amboseli National Park and the private land owned by the Maasai. The highlight of a visit to this area is the interaction with the Maasai.

Kambi ya Tembo Camp (BLD)

Sunday – Monday, 30 – 31 January 2011
SINYA - ArushaTARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

We leave our Maasai friends today and drive to Arusha for lunch and then continue to Tarangire National Park. Situated 120km (75 miles) from Arusha, Tarangire National Park is easily accessible and boasts magnificent herds of elephant and other species of wildlife. The baobab-studded landscape also plays host to a vast variety of resident and migratory bird life. Looking out over the rolling countryside the lodge is a tranquil oasis set in over 2,600 sq kms (900 sq miles) of National Park. The Tarangire flows north to south year-round and sustains an abundance of fauna and flora rarely seen elsewhere. You spend two days here.

Maramboi Luxury Tented Camp (BLD)

Tuesday, 1 February 2011
LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

We continue our safari with a short drive to Lake Manyara National Park. This beautiful reserve is situated under the cliffs of a huge escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, and the varied terrain includes the cliff's forests, a short Savannah plain at the bottom of the cliffs, and the shoreline and great Lake Manyara. An incredible variety of animals and birds are found here, including Manyara famous "tree climbing" lions. Manyara has been the location of much scientific research, including definitive studies on the very large herds of African elephants found here.

Lake Eyasi
We rise very early to begin our excursion to the nearby Lake Eyasi in the Rift Valley, still inhabited by a tribe of hunter-gatherers, the Hadzabe, a relic of ancient times who still follow a style of life similar to the humans who inhabited the Earth before the discovery of agriculture. Another interesting tribe are the Datoga or Barabaig, also called Mangati (fierce enemy) by the Maasai who expelled them from the Ngorongoro Highlands during their unstoppable advance to the south some time in the nineteenth century. In the afternoon, those interested may visit the village of Karatu or the Njia Panda school are also options for anyone interested in cultural interaction or in helping to the development of the rural communities of Africa. Those photographers not interested in visiting Lake Eyasi and the Hadzabe, have the option to go to the Ngorongoro Crater for a full day game drive. There will be an extra cost for this option to cover enterence and park fees.
Ngorongoro Farm House (BLD)

Friday, 4 February 2011
Ngorongoro Crater
After an early breakfast, we continue our safari adventure to the Ngorongoro Crater. Ngorongoro's caldera shelters the most beautiful wildlife haven left on earth. The Maasai and their cattle co-exist with the wildlife in this area, and visitors are able to appreciate this ancient interplay between wildlife and man. Interpretive game drives through the emerald plains and forests of the crater floor engender guests with a respect for the people and wildlife of this world wonder. We will have three days to explore this eight natural wonder of the world.
Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (BLD)

Saturday – Monday, 5 – 7 February 2011
Serengeti National Park
After breakfast at the lodge, we head for our last destination, the famous Serengeti National Park. We have six full days to explore its 5,600 sq. miles. We will see cheetah, giraffe, lion, leopard, elephant - the list is endless. And each year it is the scene of the great migration where millions of wildebeest and zebra make their annual trek in search of fresh grass. Serengeti National Park is the Africa most of us have seen on television. Many National Geographic specials have been filmed here. Now we can see first hand why so many naturalists and photographers are drawn to this place.

Lake Masek Tented Camp (BLD)

We depart for Arusha as our safari comes to an end. A day room will be provided as we prepare for our flight home. We will be transferred to the airport this evening. As safaris have become more popular over the years, most of the vast Serengeti National Park has been restricted to staying on the roads with no off-road driving. This can be frustrating to the serious photographer that wants to get up close to the subject to photograph. Focus on Planet Earth has made a special arrangement with the Tanzania Parks Board to allow our photographers to drive off-road to get the shots. However, that came with a price. Shane will survey the photographers on this expedition and determine how many and which days photographers want the option to drive off-road.)
